Warm Up Your Winter

Embrace the Magic of Winter in Downtown Halifax

As the holiday decorations are packed away for another year, it can sometimes seem like there’s nothing to look forward to until spring arrives. But just because it’s January, doesn’t mean you have to hibernate. In fact, Downtown Halifax is brimming with exciting adventures to enjoy year round.

To kickstart your winter fun, we gathered some ideas to help you warm up your winter in Downtown Halifax.

Immerse Yourself in Local Culture

This winter, make it your goal to learn more about our vibrant local culture and explore our city like a visitor. Step into brewing history at the Alexander Keith’s Brewery, immerse yourself in our maritime past at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, visit Maud Lewis’ little house at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and learn more about the ongoing story of immigration to Canada at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

Take Up a New Hobby

Winter is the perfect season to pick up a new hobby, whether it’s knitting, jewelry making or painting. The hardest part is often getting started! Fortunately, Downtown Halifax is home to plenty of shops to support your creative endeavours including DeSerres, The Loop Modern Fibre Craft, Yolo Craft, YuYo Craft Supply + Tea House, the NSCAD Art Supply Store, and more.

Mix It Up!

Get your taste of Halifax’s thriving mixology scene at the Halifax Cocktail Festival! Hosted by the team behind Curated Food & Drink Magazine, this world-class cocktail event takes place January 18 at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront.

Enjoy Music, Sports & Theatre

Get out and enjoy some “live” action this winter! From music to sports and theatre, Downtown Halifax has it all! Catch your favourite musical acts at venues like the Light House Arts Centre and The Carleton, cheer on the Halifax Mooseheads and the Halifax Thunderbirds at the Scotiabank Centre, and be captivated by some live-action drama at Neptune Theatre.

Dine Around

Dine Around, the annual celebration of local food and restaurants, takes place for the entire month of February, and is a great opportunity to visit your favourite restaurants and discover new ones. Best of all, the special menus are budget-friendly, ranging from $10 up to $60.

Bundle Up & Get Outside!

Make the most of winter by getting outside! Bundle up and take a stroll along the Halifax Waterfront, explore the grounds of the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, or discover public art with the Self-Guided Downtown Art Tour. And the best part? You can bring your dog along for your outdoor adventures.

And don’t miss the DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN light projection shows at Grafton Park until January 12 and enjoy the sparkling 28-foot-tall winter tree in Peace and Friendship Park until the end of March.
