Accessible Parking Information
Most parking lots and garages are required to have accessible parking spots, and payment is required in those paid areas. However, there are plenty of free on-street accessible parking options available, which you can view here.
If you see a * next to the name of a parkade or lot, that means they have EV Charging Stations. Visit PlugShare or download the PlugShare App to see all the EV Charging locations.

On-Street Parking Payment
On-street parking in Downtown Halifax consists of a pay-by-plate, pay-by-zone system using pay stations. Pay stations are installed on-street, and there is a mixture of paid, permit and hour parking in parking zones. The pay stations allow you to pay using coin, credit card, debit card, and smartphone with the HotSpot mobile app. Payment is attached to your vehicle (by your license plate), not the parking space. This means your vehicle can move freely within the parking zone up to the time purchased or maximum time allowed.
HotSpot Mobile App
We recommend that you download the HotSpot mobile app to help you pay for your on-street parking. Get HotSpot on Google Play or download it on the Apple App Store.
Pro-Tip: You’ll need to know your license plate and parking zone to initiate a parking session when using either a pay station or the HotSpot mobile app.
On-street parking is FREE after 6 pm and on weekends and holidays. Most of the Downtown area is in Zone B. On-street parking rates for Zone B are as follows:
- 8:00 am - 10:00 am: $2.50 per hour
- 10:00 am - 1:00 pm: $3.75 per hour
- 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm: $2.50 per hour
- 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm: $1.25 per hour
- Daily Max: $27.50

No Stopping Zones
Make sure you read the street signage carefully before parking Downtown. Some streets have rush hour "No Stopping" zones. If your vehicle is parked at one of these locations during the posted rush hour times, it will be towed and impounded.
Note that the ‘‘No Parking" symbol is less restrictive as you may park in a "No Parking" zone as long as you are actively loading/unloading for up to 30 minutes.
-
Parking Permits
Purchase your parking permit online with the new system that allows you to apply for parking permits, and submit and manage your documents online. Most permits will be tied to your license plate and zones; therefore, there is no need to display the permit in your window. For permit parking, zones are numbered 1-15 and are listed on the parking signage.
For more information on parking permits, including how to apply for a permit, click here.
-
Loading Zones
Loading Zones allow up to a maximum of 30 minutes of parking as long as you are actively loading or unloading passengers or materials. Loading zones are in effect 6 am - 6 pm Monday to Friday unless otherwise specified. 24-hour loading zones are in effect 7 days a week including weekends and holidays. Remaining in a loading zone when no longer loading/unloading may result in a fine.
-
Winter Parking
The Municipal overnight winter parking ban is in effect every year from December 15 to March 31 and is enforced only during declared weather events and ongoing clearing operations. Please visit halifax.ca/snow for up-to-date information regarding winter parking bans, especially if the weather conditions are deteriorating or if storm warnings are in effect. When the winter parking ban is in effect, parking vehicles between 1 am - 6 am is restricted on streets in most communities under the HRM Traffic Authority. During the winter parking ban, tickets can be issued for obstruction of snow removal.
Click here to register to receive Overnight Winter Parking Ban notifications. -
Special Event Parking
When special events are scheduled in Halifax, such as a parade, a film shoot, fireworks, tree lighting, or construction zones, signs will inform you that parking in those areas is restricted.
-
Accessible On-Street Parking
There are several designated accessible on-street parking spaces in Downtown Halifax.
Halifax Regional Municipality has created a map for these spaces. View the map.
Accessible Parking Questions
Does my accessible permit allow me to park for free in paid parking areas (e.g., paid parking lots & garages)?
- No. All on-street Accessible Parking spots within the municipality are free for those with a valid accessible permit, however payment is required in paid parking areas and lots.
Can I temporarily park in an accessible zone if I am loading/unloading?
- Motorists may only park in an accessible zone if the vehicle has an accessible permit displayed. Accessible permits are issued to the person as opposed to the vehicle, so please ensure you bring it with you when you are travelling.
