Coming Downtown and wondering where to park?

From on-street parking to lots and garages, there are thousands of parking places in Downtown Halifax. Here you’ll find practical information on parking to help you make your parking plan before heading out.

We also recommend downloading the HotSpot mobile app to help you pay for your parking – you can use it for on-street parking and at some of the parking lots along the Waterfront. Get HotSpot on Google Play or download it on the Apple App Store. Learn more about HotSpot here

And finally, don’t let parking stop you from coming Downtown. There are plenty of places to park!

On-Street Parking

  • On-Street Parking Payment

On-street parking in Downtown Halifax consists of a pay-by-plate, pay-by-zone system using pay stations. Pay stations are installed on-street, and there is a mixture of paid, permit and hour parking in parking zones. The pay stations allow you to pay using coin, credit card, debit card, and smartphone with the HotSpot mobile app. Payment is attached to your vehicle (by your license plate), not the parking space. This means your vehicle can move freely within the parking zone up to the time purchased or maximum time allowed.

Pro-Tip: You’ll need to know your license plate and parking zone to initiate a parking session when using either a pay station or the HotSpot mobile app.

On-street parking is FREE after 6 pm and on weekends and holidays. Most of the Downtown area is in Zone B. On-street parking rates for Zone B are as follows:

    8 am - 10 am:  $2.00 per hour
    10 am - 2 pm:  $3.00 per hour
    2 pm - 5 pm:    $2.00 per hour
    5 pm - 6 pm:    $1.00 per hour
    Daily Max:       $23.00

Learn more about on-street parking, including how to use a pay station, here.

  • No Stopping Zones

Make sure you read the street signage carefully before parking Downtown. Some streets have rush hour ‘No Stopping’ zones, and if your vehicle is parked at one of these locations during the posted rush hour times, it will be towed and impounded. Note that the ‘‘No Parking’ symbol is less restrictive as you may park in a ‘No Parking’ zone as long as you are actively loading/unloading for up to 30 minutes.

  • Dos & Don’ts of On-Street Parking

DO: Park at least five metres away from a fire hydrant
DO: Make sure you are not blocking a driveway
DO: Park at least 10 metres back from a stop sign
DO: Park at least 7.5 metres from a corner
DO: Use the HotSpot mobile app to pay for your on-street parking session
DO: Make a parking plan before heading Downtown

DON’T: Park in or too close to a crosswalk
    DON’T: Park on a sidewalk
DON’T: Park in a fire lane
DON’T: Park at a bus stop
    DON’T: Park in a no-parking zone
DON’T: Park in a bike lane
DON’T: Park in an accessible parking space (unless you have a government-issued permit)

Please contact 311, HRM’s Contact Centre, with any questions or concerns about on-street parking.

  • Parking Permits

Purchase your parking permit online with the new system that allows you to apply for parking permits, and submit and manage your documents online. Most permits will be tied to your license plate and zones. Therefore, there is no need to display the permit in your window. For permit parking, zones are numbered 1-15 and are listed on the parking signage.

For more information on parking permits, including how to apply for a permit, click here.

  • Loading Zones

Loading Zones allow up to a maximum of 30 minutes of parking as long as you are actively loading or unloading passengers or materials. Loading zones are in effect 6 am - 6 pm Monday to Friday unless otherwise specified. 24-hour loading zones are in effect 7 days a week including weekends and holidays. Remaining in a loading zone when no longer loading/unloading may result in a fine.

  • Winter Parking

The Municipal overnight winter parking ban is in effect every year from December 15 to March 31 and is enforced only during declared weather events and ongoing clearing operations. Please visit halifax.ca/snow for up-to-date information regarding winter parking bans, especially if the weather conditions are deteriorating or if storm warnings are in effect. When the winter parking ban is in effect, parking vehicles between 1 - 6 am is restricted on streets in most communities under the HRM Traffic Authority. During the winter parking ban, tickets can be issued for obstruction of snow removal.

Click here to register to receive Overnight Winter Parking Ban notifications.

  • Special Event Parking

When special events are scheduled in Halifax, such as a parade, a film shoot, fireworks, tree lighting, or construction zones, signs will inform you that parking in those areas is restricted.
