African Heritage Month
February is African Heritage Month, with this year’s theme of “Sea of Struggle: African Peoples from Shore to Shore.” The theme recognizes the struggle people of African Descent face from the shores of Africa to the shores of Nova Scotia.
Here are some ways Downtown Halifax is commemorating African Heritage Month:
- DHBC’s DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN at Grafton Park will be displaying the African Heritage Month light projection show. The light projection highlights four migrations people of African Descent embarked on to arrive on Nova Scotian shores. The show will be projected on the former Halifax Memorial Library nightly all throughout February.
- Halifax City Hall will be lit up in black, green, red, and yellow (Pan-African colours) on the evenings of February 18-21 and February 23-28. For the entire month, the Pan-African flag will also be displayed at Grand Parade, and on the Viola Desmond Ferry.
- The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 are hosting two African Heritage Month events: Calypso Celebration with pianist Eddie Bullen and percussionist Garrett Burgess (February 2) and Black Ice Film Screening, a documentary that examines the role of Black players in Canadian hockey (February 21).
