FREE FERRY THIS MARCH BREAK!

Downtown Halifax and Downtown Dartmouth, in partnership with Halifax Transit, have collaborated to offer people of all ages the opportunity to have a March Break adventure on both sides of the harbour!

From Monday, March 11 to Saturday, March 16, the Alderney/Halifax ferry service will be FREE between 11 am - 2 pm.

MARCH BREAK ACTIVITIES

HERE ARE 25 KID-APPROVED ACTIVITIES TO DO WITH YOUR FAMILY THIS MARCH BREAK:

  1. Take a ferry ride across the harbour (and back!). PSST! It's free between 11 am - 2 pm from March 11 - 16. 
     
  2. Check out the 3 lights projection shows on the former Halifax Memorial Library at Grafton Park: 'Spring is Coming', March Break, and St. Patrick's Day. These light shows are a part of DHBC's DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN lighting program. Shows will play back-to-back with each other daily from sunset to 11 pm.
     
  3. See "Hockey: Faster than Ever", the new exhibit at the Discovery Centre. PRO-TIP: Book your tickets ahead of time here.
     
  4. Get your picture taken with the giant JUNOS letters at Cable Wharf on the Halifax Waterfront (and then pop into COWS or Peace by Chocolate for a sweet treat!)
     
  5. "Sail Away & Play at Sea" at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic from 10 am - 4 pm daily from March 9-17. 
     
  6. Explore the grounds at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site or book a family tour and learn how soldiers survived the cold winters back in the 19th century. 
     
  7. "Travel the World" at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, open from March 9 - 17 with FREE admission. 
     
  8. Dine out at a kid-friendly restaurant (see below for suggestions).
     
  9. Grab a hot chocolate from one of the many local cafés - try a new one everyday!
     
  10. Take a selfie with the Halifax Town Clock.
     
  11. Stroll the Halifax Harbourwalk, a 4.4 km walk along the harbourfront - make sure you check out the local artwork!
     
  12. Visit the Submarine Playground on the waterfront and take a selfie with the Wave.
     
  13. Check out the winter-themed lights in Peace and Friendship Park by The Westin Nova Scotian (including the twinkly 26-foot-tall tree) - up until the end of March.
     
  14. Fill up on candy at one of Downtown Halifax's specialty sweet shops like Freak Lunchbox or Flynn's Dairy Bar & Convenience.
     
  15. Take a Self-Guided Art Tour of Downtown Halifax.
     
  16. Take a tufting workshop at YOLO Crafts on Barrington Street and take your creation home with you! Great for kids 12 and older. 
     
  17. Play some board games at the Board Room Game Café.
     
  18. Visit the Train Station Playground in Peace and Friendship Park by the Halifax Train Station.
     
  19. Try your luck at an escape room like Captured Escape Rooms or Trapped Halifax.
     
  20. Grill your own dinner at Gangnam Korean BBQ.
     
  21. Wander through the shops at the Historic Properties and pick up a special, local souvenir at shops like Carrefour Atlantic Emporium, Wild Things or POSH!.
     
  22. Pop in to Strange Adventures Comics & Curiosities and browse their selection of comic books. 
     
  23. Book a staycation at a Downtown hotel with a pool (see below for suggestions).
     
  24. Have breakfast for lunch every day of the week at Elle's Bistro on Barrington Street.
     
  25. Take in all the St. Patrick's Day celebrations including the Halifax St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 10 (starting at 1 pm, the parade runs down Lower Water Street from the Halifax Seaport area to the Historic Properties).
