While September isn’t technically the start of a new year, it sure feels like a fresh beginning, doesn’t it?
Maybe it’s the return of the school year, the shift in routines, or the anticipation of cozy fall days just around the corner. But let’s be clear—summer is not over yet. It officially runs until September 21, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
That means there’s still plenty of time to soak up the warm weather, sunshine, and vibrant energy that fills Downtown Halifax this time of year. With exciting events, outdoor patios, and so much to explore, September is the perfect month to make the most of everything the city has to offer.

September 13-14: Maritime Heritage Festival
Hit up the inaugural Maritime Heritage Festival on September 13–14 along the Halifax waterfront, a free, family-friendly celebration featuring live music, historic ship tours, interactive marine activities, and pop-up displays in partnership with over 25 organizations. From boat building and touch tanks to Raina the Mermaid and performances by local groups, there's something for everyone to "sea and do" at this vibrant waterfront event!
Don't miss the FREE, all-ages kick-off show on Friday, September 12, at 8 pm with Cassie & Maggie at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (1675 Lower Water Street).
September 12 - 17: Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF)
AIFF is an annual celebration of film and media from around the world. Whether you're a true movie buff or just want to check out something new, AIFF has something for everyone to enjoy.
September 26 - October 5: Prismatic Arts Festival
Prismatic Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary arts festival that showcases and celebrates innovative work by Indigenous artists and artists of colour from across Canada. Enjoy works in theatre, dance, music, film, and more.
Throughout September at the AGNS
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) is hosting a variety of events this month, check out a French Tour on September 11, Mi'Kmaq Language Art Tour on September 25 and Painting & Pints: Maud Lewis – Tulips on Septmber 26.
