2026-2027 Gritty to Pretty Grant Program - APPLY NOW!
Call for Creative Applications
We encourage artists, collectives, organizations, and property owners to think creatively and propose projects of all scales that enhance the downtown experience for residents, workers, and visitors.
While mural applications are encouraged, projects can also include innovative installations using windows, panels, lighting, projections, or other creative approaches—especially where traditional wall space may be limited.
For 2026, the program will once again offer the following grant streams:
- Open Grant
- Mural Grant
- Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) Open Grant
- Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) Mural Grant
- Façade Lighting Grant
All grant streams offer funding of up to $10,000 per project, and applicants may submit multiple applications.
We do have eight pre-selected opportunities this year:
- (1) Mary’s African Cuisine Mural Opportunity ($10,000)
- (1) 1660 Hollis Street Mural Opportunity ($10,000)
- (1) I Heart Bikes Mural Opportunity ($10,000)
- (5) DHBC Picnic Tables Mural Opportunities ($2,000 per table)
For your reference, detailed briefs for these opportunities are below, along with the application forms. The above eight opportunities do not need property owner approval as DHBC has already secured that.
Artists are still encouraged to submit applications for projects at other locations throughout Downtown Halifax, but please note that any application for a site not listed above must include a completed Property Owner Approval Form and/or written confirmation of approval from the property owner. Applications submitted without property owner approval will not be reviewed.

Applicants are encouraged to include supporting materials such as concept drawings, renderings, examples of past work, and letters of support where applicable.
