‘From Pond to Podium,’ DHBC's latest light projection show can be seen now until November 30.
(Halifax, N.S.) - Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) is commemorating the sport of curling, and its roots in Halifax, with a brand-new light show, projected on the façade of the former Halifax Memorial Library at Grafton Park (corner of Grafton Street and Spring Garden Road.)
‘From Pond to Podium’ can be viewed starting at dusk (5:30 p.m.) until 11:00 p.m. each night, while the 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials are in Downtown Halifax, November 22 –30, 2025.
“This has been a two-year journey, getting to this moment,” says Robert Belliveau, Vice Chair, 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials. “We’ve been working on bringing the Trials to Halifax for a while now, so to know it’s finally here and that we can hit an even bigger audience with a beautiful light projection show dedicated to a sport so many of us hold dear, is the icing on the cake.”
DHBC’s ‘From Pond to Podium’ is a two-and-a-half-minute light show, that tells the story of curling, the origins of the sport, its ties to Halifax, and honours the local icons who made it even more popular.
“Colleen Jones is a Halifax legend, so honouring her curling career and enduring status as a local icon in this show has been a gift,” says Belliveau. “Her accolades are long, including a very recent induction to the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, and you learn all of that while watching the show.”
The show is one of many light shows already shown, or scheduled to be shown between now and the middle of January 2026, as part of DHBC’s DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN at Grafton Park. The light shows at Grafton Park are created by multimedia artist Nick Iwaskow of Wasko AV and are part of DHBC’s overarching winter placemaking program, DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN.
“Our goal with the light shows, as with all of our placemaking projects, is to turn a space into a place,” says Jonathan Goldson, DHBC’s Placemaking Manager. “These light projections are meant to turn an otherwise plain building into entertainment, hopefully spreading joy during the darkest months of the year. However, some shows, like this one, have been created with more of an educational component to it, a way for us to use the platform to honour people, and past events, that have shaped Halifax. Growing up in Jamaica, I know I personally enjoyed learning about the sport of curling and the history it has in Halifax.”
The 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials are on now at the Scotiabank Centre.
