Downtown Spotlight: Elle's Bistro

Meet Mary Ellen Planetta (aka Elle), owner of Elle's Bistro

Elle grew up in Sydney, Cape Breton and in proper kitchen party fashion, spent many hours preparing, hosting, and gathering in kitchens. She was always especially fond of brunch, and had a keen interest in nutrition, health, and wellness. After completing a Human Kinetics degree at St. Francis Xavier University, she moved to Halifax to pursue a second diploma in economics at Saint Mary's University Halifax, all while working at Cousin’s Diner as a waitress. She learned a tremendous amount from the team at this long-time, family-owned restaurant in the North End, and was inspired to open her own eatery someday. That passion became a reality in 2014 when she secured the storefront at 1678 Barrington Street and Elle's Bistro came to life, 2 months before her first child was born.

With over 20 eggs benny options, local craft beer and cider, and an extensive all-day menu, Elle's Bistro maintains a diner-style feel with fast and friendly service. From french toast and omelettes to burgers and milkshakes, there is a little something for everyone to enjoy, with gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options available.

You might see Mary Ellen in the kitchen, processing transactions, or topping up coffees, while her husband, Peter, works as the general manager. Together, they have been busy working to open their seasonal patio, launching a new menu, building a community kitchen for one of their staff to kickstart her business from (Emma D’Eon Cakes And Catering), and host twice-monthly comedy events. With the shared interest in supporting local and serving those who work, live, and visit Downtown Halifax, they also offer catering, group, and private event services by request.
