Free Event - The Halifax Memorial Library: Then and Now
(Halifax, N.S.) - The ‘Friends of the Halifax Memorial Library’ invite the public to a free presentation on the history of the former Halifax Memorial Library, Monday, January 12, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Paul O’Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library, Spring Garden Road.
The former library has been closed for 10+ years and is now facing possible demolition. This event will provide all concerned residents with an opportunity to explore the history of the former library; a building and grounds steeped in Halifax's rich history. It will also be a platform to discuss its future role in Halifax as a thriving city.
“A moment to remember the past to shape the future,” says Historian William Breckenridge, and organizer of the event. “My hope is that we can start a serious discussion around how we can save the former Halifax Memorial Library from possible demolition. Downtown needs a place for community arts, education and remembrance - which is what this space and building were always meant to be used for.”
