About the Event

Emancipation Day is the day The Slavery Abolition Act became law in the British Empire (including Canada) and ended the practice of slavery for millions of African People and their descendants around the world. The Act became law on August 1, 1834 marking the first Emancipation Day. The Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia, partnered with African Nova Scotian Affairs would like to invite you to the Halifax Waterfront to commemorate and celebrate this historical day.

This event will take place on the Halifax Waterfront on the Cunard Public Space. The event will feature delegates and community stakeholders who will bring remarks on the history of emancipation day.


Following the event there will be light refreshments.
The event will take place under a tent and seating is provided.
The event will also be broacast by Eastlink TV.
