Discover More of the Halifax Waterfront

There’s nothing quite like exploring the Halifax Waterfront. 🌊

Filled with local shops and restaurants, attractions, public art, historic sites, and, of course, beautiful scenic views of the water, it is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

👉 Did you know? The Halifax Waterfront features a continuous 4.4 km boardwalk, known locally as the "Harbourwalk", that stretches from the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 all the way to Casino Nova Scotia.

But next time you're there, don't stop at the Halifax Ferry Terminal! There’s so much more to discover as you continue along the Harbourwalk. From hidden gems and waterfront patios to established shops and green spaces, there's so much more to see beyond Cable Wharf.

Come explore it with us!

The Dockyard Clock

As you leave Cable Wharf and walk towards the Halifax Ferry Terminal, you’ll come across the Dockyard Clock. Pause here and look all the way up George Street toward Grand Parade, and, beyond that, you’ll spot the Old Town Clock.

Manufactured in 1767, the Dockyard Clock was installed on the Halifax waterfront in 1996. It is recognized as Canada’s oldest working clock.

Take a Ferry Ride

If you have the time, why not take a ferry ride across the harbour to Dartmouth and back? Afterall, the views of Downtown Halifax are hard to beat from the water.

Plus, a return trip on the Halifax Transit Ferry can cost only $3.00 if your return trip falls within the 90-minute transfer window.

👉 Did you know? Children 12 and under can ride the ferry for free!

Nathan Green Square

Just past the Halifax Ferry Terminal, you’ll find Nathan Green Square, a public green space overlooking Halifax Harbour. It’s the perfect spot to take a rest under the shade of the trees and watch the Halifax Ferry come and go across the harbour.

And on sunny days, you can browse some of the local vendors who set up along the square.

Historic Properties

The Historic Properties have long been a favourite destination for both locals and visitors. With a collection of local shops, services, and businesses, it’s a great place to browse for local fashion, souvenirs, artwork, and unique gifts.

Shops include Carrefour Atlantic Emporium, Colwell’s, POSH, Lisa Drader Murphy, Shoreline Designs, and more.

👉 See a directory of all the businesses in the Historic Properties here.

After you leave the shops, explore more of the outside area of the Historic Properties, including the courtyard where the Lower Deck holds their popular courtyard parties throughout the summer.

🍻 The original Lower Deck Pub opened its doors on the Halifax Waterfront in 1974, and features local entertainment 7 nights a week. Now that's worthy of a "SOCIABLE!"

Stone Throw's Patio

Ready for a break? Stone Throw’s Patio at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront is the perfect place for a pit stop. Savour local beers and flavours while enjoying daily $6 happy hour specials and live music as part of their popular summer music series, “Celtic on the Harbour.”

This corner of the Halifax Waterfront Harbourwalk also features outdoor mural installations created in partnership with the Halifax Mural Festival. Take a moment to admire the artwork, or relax in one of the colourful Adirondack chairs lining the waterfront.

Purdy's Wharf

As you continue along the waterfront, you’ll reach Purdy’s Wharf, home to the two distinctive towers that mark the Downtown Halifax skyline, plus a variety of businesses.

The large wharf, known as Purdy's Landing, also features a public green space with seating, and connects to the Downtown pedway network that links the Waterfront with the rest of Downtown Halifax.

👉 Did you know? You can walk all the way from Purdy's Wharf to the Scotiabank Centre without stepping outside!

Casino Nova Scotia

And finally, you’ll arrive at the official end of the Harbourwalk at Casino Nova Scotia. Take in the views of the harbour, or step inside for some gaming, dining, and live entertainment.

We hope you have enjoyed our tour of the Halifax Waterfront beyond the Halifax Ferry Terminal. Get out and explore if yourself this summer!
