Canada's Storytellers: Kim Thúy and Charles-Olivier Michaud

Join Kim and the film's director, Charles-Olivier Michaud, in conversation, as they discuss the finer points of adapting the page to the screen ahead of the screening.

About the Film

ru is inspired by the story of the arrival of Kim Thúy (Tinh) in Quebec. After a dangerous sea crossing and a stay in a Malaysian refugee camp, a young Vietnamese girl named Tinh and her family arrive in Quebec where they begin a new life. Thanks to the warm welcome from all, including their sponsor family, she slowly adapts to her new reality. Tinh overcomes her shyness to learn a new language, discovers a new culture and adjusts to a new life in Quebec.

The evening will begin with a bilingual conversation and Q&A followed by the film screening in French with English subtitles.

À propos du film

ru s’inspire de l’histoire de l’arrivée de Kim Thúy (Tinh) au Québec. Après une dangereuse traversée en mer et un séjour dans un camp de réfugiés en Malaisie, une jeune Vietnamienne nommée Tinh et sa famille arrivent au Québec, où ils commencent une nouvelle vie. Grâce à l’accueil chaleureux de tous, y compris de leur famille de parrainage, elle s’adapte lentement à sa nouvelle réalité. Tinh surmonte sa timidité pour apprendre une nouvelle langue, découvre une nouvelle culture et s’adapte à une nouvelle vie au Québec.

La soirée débutera par une conversation bilingue et une séance de questions, suivies de la projection du film en français sous-titré en anglais.
