Resources and Programs

Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) is the voice and resource for the businesses residing in the central business district of Halifax, Nova Scotia. We run many programs, events, and marketing initiatives to make Downtown Halifax a better place to live, work, and play.

As a DHBC member, you get access to all of these membership benefits:

DHBC Welcome Centre on Barrington Street

DHBC has a ground floor Welcome Centre located at 1546 Barrington Street, Suite 104. Our Welcome Centre is a configurable "pop up" space that can be used by Downtown businesses and partners to showcase and raise awareness.

Seasonal Decorations and Signage

DHBC partners with HRM to provide hanging flower baskets on George Street and Barrington Street during the warmer months. HRM maintains the baskets to provide a uniform look with the other areas of the Capital District. During the holiday season, DHBC installs and maintains wreaths throughout the Downtown.

Graffiti Removal

DHBC engages Atlantic Graffiti Busters to remove all graffiti on private commercial buildings within its boundaries on an ongoing basis. This is the seventh year of the program and it has had a profound effect on the experience of Downtown Halifax.

To request free graffiti removal for your business or Downtown commercial location, contact us.

Banner Program

DHBC provides banner space on banner poles to promote events and programs that take place in Downtown Halifax. The Atlantic Jazz Festival, World Hockey Championships, Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, Neptune Theatre, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Children's Wish Foundation, Tall Ships and Metro United Way have all used the banner program to raise awareness about their events and programs.

Enviro Team and Cooperative Maintenance Program

We are passionate about keeping our Downtown clean and beautiful. DHBC partners with the HRM on matters of maintenance and ornamentation of the Downtown core.

During the tourist season, May to October, DHBC hires the Enviro Team to maintain and enhance the Downtown area by removing graffiti and posters and painting public items such as garbage cans and lamp posts. The Enviro Team consists of summer students who also serve as a valuable resource for tourists and visitors looking for directions or recommendations.
