THE OPEN ONLINE DIGITAL GRANT IS NOW CLOSED.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, small businesses suddenly found themselves faced with unexpected and unprecedented new challenges, and it became clear that being ‘open’ online for business was necessary to survive.
But having an online presence and eCommerce site is just the beginning. Managing and marketing an online store can sometimes prove to be either an overwhelming or unmanageable task for some small business owners.
That is why Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) is offering the new Open Online Digital Grant program. This new program will help small businesses improve their online presence to help them not only survive the pandemic but help them thrive post-pandemic.
The Open Online Digital Grant program can be customized to suit the individual needs of your business. When applying, please indicate which category you are looking for help and support in:
- Creation of an eCommerce site
- Enhancements to or expansion of an existing eCommerce site
- Management of an existing eCommerce site
- Marketing and promotion of an existing eCommerce site
Successful applicants will receive up to $2,500.00 (including tax) in grant funding to go towards their digital needs.
Applicants must be a member of DHBC and have a business in the Downtown Halifax catchment area to be eligible for the grant. The grant is open to all businesses with a product and/or service to sell.
To be considered for an Open Online Digital Grant, applicants must complete and submit the form and agree to the Terms & Conditions (below). Grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis, and applicants will receive notification within 48 hours if their application is successful or not.

Terms & Conditions
The Open Online Digital Grant program is offering grants up to a maximum of $2,500.00 including tax per business.
To be eligible for the grant, businesses must be a member of Downtown Halifax Business Commission and located in the Downtown Halifax catchment area. Businesses must also have a product and/or service to sell to be eligible for the grant. Organizations with more than one business and/or eCommerce site, can apply for each business and/or eCommerce site.
The Call for Applications is now open, and applications will be accepted until 11:59 pm (AST) on Friday, February 26, 2021. Grant applications will be reviewed and approved by DHBC, contingent upon meeting the criteria and sufficient funds in the overall program. Grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis, and applicants will receive notification within 48 hours if their application is successful or not. If the funds for the grant are depleted before Friday, February 26, 2021, DHBC will make an official announcement in the DHBC Downtown Members Update newsletter and/or by email to all applicants that the grant application process is closed.
Upon being awarded a grant, recipients will be contacted by DHBC to discuss the Terms and Conditions of the grant, details regarding how and when to apply for reimbursement, and to confirm the digital needs of the business. If needed, DHBC will provide vendor suggestions to the grant recipient; however, each business will be responsible for choosing the vendor they work with, obtaining quotes for their services, and all subsequent contact with the vendor. DHBC will not be responsible for the direct service between the vendor and the business.
Once the work is underway or near completion, the business will send proof of work or completion (including but not limited to, invoice of work, cost/work-to-date, marketing plan, URL link, screen grabs, etc.) and an invoice for up to $2,500.00 including tax to Kimberly Dossett, Director of Operations, Downtown Halifax Business Commission, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Businesses will be responsible for their own online website hosting costs, online ad campaigns, and any other cost that may arise from hosting, managing, and/or marketing an eCommerce site.
The deadline for final submission of invoices for reimbursement will be Monday, March 29, 2021.
Refunds will be processed every thirty (30) days and mailed directly to the applicant in the form of a cheque.
Grants are provided at the discretion of Downtown Halifax Business Commission.
