Today, 28 teams with a total of 152 volunteers collected 38 bags of garbage, 18 bags of recycling, and 11 bags of compost plus many “interesting” objects throughout Downtown Halifax while participating in the 24th Annual Clean Sweep, presented by Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC).
“We’re thrilled at the number of volunteers that participated this year,” said Paul MacKinnon, DHBC Executive Director. “The sidewalks are cleaner and more welcoming. The volunteers also left the event with a deeper awareness of the litter issue on our city streets and what the Downtown Halifax Crew encounters on a daily basis.”
The event brought members of local companies, non-profit organizations, and groups of friends to the streets to clean designated city blocks in Downtown Halifax. The day was also the official kick-off for DHBC’s Downtown Halifax Crew, a group of seven students hired to provide tourist information and maintain the cleanliness of Downtown Halifax throughout the summer.
Clean Sweep included a one-hour clean-up of the Downtown with lunch, prizes and awards afterwards for registered teams in Grand Parade. The three award categories included: “Most Garbage Collected,” which went to Aon Reed Stenhouse; “Most Unusual Garbage Item,” which went to Antojo Tacos + Tequila, the item being a knife inside an inmate personal property bag; and the “Most Enthusiastic/Creative Team,” which went to the Cambridge Suites Hotel’s “Minions.”
