Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Enviro Team program, a dedicated group of returning university students that keeps Downtown Halifax clean throughout the summer and provides tourist information to area visitors. The Enviro Team members, easily identified by a white question mark printed on the back of their red shirts, bring a diverse and rich background to the program. Many of the students have studied abroad, travelled extensively throughout Canada, or worked on community development projects. Each brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team.
“The Enviro Team provides an important service to Downtown Halifax and the businesses,” said Paul MacKinnon, DHBC Executive Director. “Not only do they act as Downtown ambassadors in giving directions, providing a friendly welcome, and answering tourist questions – they maintain the cleanliness of the area to make sure we make a positive impression on those who visit.”
On Wednesday, June 1, Downtown Halifax will be filled with over 100 volunteers from local businesses sweeping the streets for the 22nd Annual Clean Sweep. The event, presented by DHBC, also serves as an official kick-off for DHBC’s Enviro Team. Clean Sweep teams meet in Grand Parade before dispersing to clean up their designated areas of Downtown Halifax for one hour. The Enviro Team then maintains the cleanliness of Downtown Halifax throughout the summer months.
