Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) wants the public’s help in taking areas of Downtown Halifax from “Gritty to Pretty.” Today DHBC announced the launch of its new Gritty to Pretty beautification grant for individuals and businesses seeking funding to improve areas of Downtown Halifax.
“This new grant is beneficial for the entire Downtown,” said Kimberly Dossett, DHBC’s Director of Operations. “It allows our members to take charge of their own district, gets people involved in beautifying their neighbourhoods, and helps DHBC better understand what people want to see improved in Downtown Halifax.” DHBC’s Board of Directors allocated $30,000 for the beautification grant in its 2015-2016 strategic plan.
Starting today, DHBC's Beautification Action Team, comprised of DHBC members, will begin accepting project applications. Each project grant application will be measured against criteria compiled by the DHBC Beautification Action Team, including:
- Project effectiveness, measured by priority and impact
- Project engagement, measured by public interaction and neighbour participation
- Project feasibility
- Investment effectiveness, measured by value and longevity
All proposed projects must be within the DHBC district (from Brunswick Street to the Waterfront, and the Cogswell Interchange to the South end of Barrington Street).
In addition to the “Gritty to Pretty” grant application form, interested individuals or businesses will also require written support from neighbouring properties and the developers or property owners, a design plan, and a photo of the proposed project site in their application in order to be considered. The Gritty to Pretty beautification grant application form can be downloaded here. Completed forms can be submitted via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. To be considered in the first round of grant allocations, applications must be submitted no later than July 24, 2015.
