It was a beautiful, sunny day as nearly 100 volunteers swept through Downtown Halifax for the 22nd Annual Clean Sweep, presented by Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC), on June 1. In only one hour, the volunteer teams cleared Downtown of nearly 40 bags of litter -- 28 bags of garbage and 11 bags of recycling. The day served to raise awareness about the presence of litter Downtown. It was also the official kick-off for DHBC’s Enviro Team, a group of seven students hired to provide tourist information and maintain the cleanliness of Downtown Halifax throughout the summer.
“Clean Sweep is a great event to prepare Downtown Halifax for the upcoming, busy tourist season,” said Paul MacKinnon, DHBC Executive Director. “It’s also an excellent opportunity for businesses to give back to the community and get outside of their offices for some staff bonding.”
19 teams of volunteers, representing both Downtown businesses and residents, participated in the hour long sweep and vied for a trio of awards. The three award categories were: “Most Garbage Collected,” which went to Delta Halifax; “Most Unusual Garbage Item,” which went to Crombie REIT, for finding a partial denture and a full can of soup; and the “Team Spirit” award went to Cambridge Suites Hotel, who dressed up as raccoons. Congratulations to all three for their hard work, determination, and spirit!
A huge thank you is owed to the volunteers from the following organizations: Aon, Better Business Bureau Serving the Atlantic Provinces, Breakhouse, Cambridge Suites Halifax (two teams), Crombie REIT, CUA, Delta Barrington, Delta Halifax (two teams), Emera, Gahan House (two teams), MBS Radio, Parks Canada/Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, RBC (three teams), and Waterfront Development.
