Summer 2021 is rapidly approaching, and we know this season will be a crucial sales period for businesses that continue to experience many challenges brought on by the unexpected global pandemic.
We also know how important the appearance of a storefront is to entice and welcome customers into a business. Businesses that take a little more care with the exterior of their storefront by adding a fresh coat of paint, colourful flowers in a planter, or even a few patio chairs, attract more customers into their business and increase sales. Attractive storefronts also help create a more vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for a downtown or main street area.
To help our members “get ready for summer,” Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) is launching the new Get Ready for Summer Grant program. This grant program will subsidize the cost of freshening up businesses’ storefronts and patios for the summer with a maximum grant of $500.00, including tax, per business. The grant is available to businesses that are categorized as retail, food and beverage, personal care, retail services, attractions, and accommodations. Eligible businesses MUST be a member of DHBC and located in DHBC’s catchment area.
Businesses looking to spruce up their storefront or patio for the summer can use the grant for anything that improves their exterior, including:
- Patio enhancements and furnishings
- Professional power-washing
- Labour for any of the above
Businesses should focus on exterior projects that face the street or sidewalk and enhance the pedestrian experience. Interior improvements or improvements to the back of a building, alleyway, or interior are not eligible for the grant.
The Get Ready for Summer Grant program will cover the cost of any improvements or enhancements to the exterior of your business between the timeframe of Monday, April 19, 2021 to Tuesday, August 31, 2021.
If your business is interested in applying for the Get Ready for Summer Grant, email Kimberly Dossett, Director of Operations, at email@example.com with the following information:
- Name of business
- Contact name and title
- Email and phone number
- Type of business (e.g., restaurant/bar/café, retail, personal care, retail services, attraction, or accommodation)
- Outline of what the grant will be used for
- A “before” photo, if applicable, of what needs to be improved or beautified
Applications will be evaluated and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until either funds for the grant are depleted or until 5:00 pm (ADT) on Friday, June 11, 2021 (deadline extended).
We recommend applying for the grant now and using it when the time is right for your business.
Please read the Terms & Conditions (listed below) before submitting your grant application.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
The Get Ready for Summer Grant program is offering grants up to a maximum of $500.00, including tax, per business. Businesses are welcome to apply for an amount LESS than $500.00. Grants are a one-time-only grant to assist businesses and organizations during the 2021 summer season.
To be eligible for the grant, businesses or organizations must be a member of Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC), located in DHBC’s catchment area, and are either a retail, food and beverage, personal care, retail services, attractions, or accommodation-type business. Organizations with more than one business can apply for each business individually.
Summer improvements can include the following: paint, signage, awnings, lighting, planters, flowers, patio enhancements and furnishings, professional pressure-washing, and labour associated with any of the improvements. Other items or enhancements may be considered if it is deemed necessary to improve the exterior appearance of their storefront. Only improvements or enhancements to the street-facing exterior of a business or organization will be considered. The grant may not be used for interior improvements.
The Call for Applications is now open, and applications will be accepted until 5:00 pm (ADT) on Friday, June 11, 2021 (deadlined extended). Grant applications will be reviewed and approved by DHBC, contingent upon meeting the criteria and sufficient funds in the overall program. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and applicants will receive notification within two (2) business days if their application is successful or not. If the funds for the grant are depleted before Friday, June 11, 2021, DHBC will make an official announcement by email to all members and applicants that the grant application process is closed.
Once the material is purchased and/or the work is done, the grant recipient must submit proof of purchase/payment (receipts with dates), an invoice addressed to Downtown Halifax Business Commission for the material/labour amount (up to $500.00 including tax) and “before” and “after” photographs of the completed exteriors to DHBC when they have reached the $500.00, including tax, maximum grant contribution. The final deadline to submit for reimbursement is Friday, September 10, 2021. DHBC will provide the funds to the grant recipient once sufficient proof has been submitted. Reimbursements will be processed every thirty (30) days and mailed directly to the grant recipient in the form of a cheque.
If it is determined by DHBC that a grant recipient did not use the full amount they were awarded, or the materials purchased were not eligible or used for the 2021 summer season, DHBC reserves the right to either deny payment to the grant recipient, or pay an adjusted amount based on valid receipts received.
Grants are provided at the discretion of Downtown Halifax Business Commission.
