Downtown Halifax Businesses Support New Convention Centre as Top Priority

From April 9-26, 2010, the Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) conducted its bi-annual membership survey through local market research agency, Thinkwell Research. DHBC’s membership consists of 1,800 landlords, businesses and retailers, with 20,000 employees. Results found that one out of three respondents regarded a new convention centre, from a list of six priorities, as the top priority for Downtown Halifax.

Businesses Make Downtown Shine at DHBC’s 16th Annual Clean Sweep

On Wednesday, June 2, 2010, Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) will be hosting the16th Annual Clean Sweep event. Clean Sweep is a lunch-hour event that encourages organizations to come together and help create a sparkling Downtown. Businesses are invited to submit a maximum of two teams consisting of four to six members each by contacting Lauren Martin at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 423-2179. You can also download the PDF registration form here. Registration for 21 teams will be accepted on a first-come, first serve basis and must be submitted by Wednesday, May 27.

Rod Cameron to Speak at the 9th Annual Carmichael Lecture Panel Discussion

Guest speaker Rod Cameron, President of Criterion Communications Inc., a strategic management and marketing consultancy based in Vancouver with an extensive practice in international convention and exhibition centre management, will discuss how convention centres can be the catalyst for downtown revitalization at the 9th Annual Carmichael Lecture. The lecture will take place on Thursday, February 25, 6:00-8:00 pm, at the World Trade and Convention Centre, Room 200E, 1800 Arygle Street. The event is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

Business Improvement Organizations Form Downtowns Atlantic Canada (DAC)

Downtown business improvement area associations of Atlantic Canada, with representatives from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, met recently in Moncton, NB, to sign a memorandum of understanding outlining the benefits of downtowns’ contribution to individual communities and to the provinces Atlantic Canada. The new organization, Downtowns Atlantic Canada (DAC), is a new alliance that will work to improve the positioning of downtown business improvement areas as unique, diverse, vibrant and economically healthy urban cores.

2009 Chronicle Herald Holiday Parade of Lights Announces Winners and Numbers

The 14th Annual Chronicle Herald Holiday Parade of Lights, presented by EastLink and the Downtown Halifax Business Commission, was another record-breaking success on Saturday, November 21, 2009. The Parade brought out over 100,000 spectators, who were entertained by more than 50 marching bands, majorettes, costumed walking groups and floats that lit up the evening.
