Temporary Sign (and Sandwich Board) By-Law
HRM hosted a feedback session with the business community on the by-law regarding sandwich boards on January 6. Businesses from Downtown, Spring Garden and Quinpool areas attended, along with their business commission representatives. The by-law, first adopted in 2006, but not fully enforced, makes sandwich boards legal. However, they must be licensed, be smaller than 2’ x 3’ and leave 7’ of clearance on the sidewalk. The boards can only be placed directly in front of the business in question. HRM received a great deal of feedback. DHBC supports legalized boards, but favours a less rigid licensing and enforcement system. We feel the enforcement between 2006 and present has been sufficient, and should be done on a complaint-basis, responding to safety concerns. DHBC will be sending HRM a letter on your behalf, but encourages businesses to send your concerns directly to HRM as well, before January 20. HRO Core Inc. Health Benefits
DHBC, along with HRO Core Inc., would like to offer Downtown members a health benefits program that would cut down costs and help with other human resource services. Contact HRO Core Inc. at 444-1802 or DHBC at 423-6658 for more information. Please take a moment to answer the following short survey about your plan at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=e1oZR4rMDsFYBS4U3OSnIg_3d_3d.

Sidewalk Snow Removal
A friendly reminder that all Downtown businesses are responsible for snow removal at the entrance of their establishments. This will enable pedestrian traffic to move freely and keep the downtown area fully accessible during the winter season.

Winter Parking Ban
The winter parking ban will be in effect until March 12, 2010. The parking ban restricts on-street parking each night from 1:00-7:00 am. A reminder that any vehicle, that obstructs snow removal or winter maintenance, may be ticketed. The winter parking ban fines are $50 this year. To find out more, visit http://www.halifax.ca/snow.

Snow Plowing in Downtown
The Halifax Regional Municipality is responsible for plowing snow in the urban core on streets, sidewalks and bus shelters and must meet specific standards. All streets and sidewalks will be plowed within 12 hours of the end of a snowfall. Bus stops and curb cuts will be plowed within 72 hours of the end of a snowfall. If these standards are not being met, please call 490-4000.
