DHBC’s 16th Annual Clean Sweep Has Record Number of Volunteers

On June 2, 2010, over 180 volunteers in 28 teams collected 58 bags of garbage, 29 bags of recycling, nine bags of compost and many interesting objects throughout Downtown Halifax while participating in DHBC's 16th Annual Clean Sweep event.

 

Clean Sweep took place on Clean Air Day and coincides with Canadian Environment week (May 31- June 5), the event brought members of local organizations into the streets of Downtown Halifax to provide much appreciated elbow grease, cleaning designated city blocks. The event was also a kick-off for DHBC’s Enviro Team, a group of students hired to give tourist information and maintain the cleanliness of Downtown Halifax throughout the summer.  

 

Clean Sweep included a one-hour clean-up of the Downtown as well as lunch, prizes and awards for registered teams in Grand Parade. This year had three award categories: “Most Garbage Collected” went to Halifax Marriott Habourfront, “Most Unusual Garbage Item” went to Aon Reed Stenhouse Inc., the item being a matching pair of plastic skull candle holders, and the “Most Enthusiastic/Creative Team” went to the Nova Scotia Environment “Debris-Fers,” who dressed up as superheroes.

 

The following organizations participated in this year’s Clean Sweep: Abridean, Aon Reed Stenhouse Inc., Avante-Guard, Cambridge Suites, Credit Union Atlantic, Delta Hotels, Fortis Properties, Greater Halifax Partnership, Halifax Marriott Harbourfront, Marriott Residence Inn, McInnes Cooper, Nova Scotia Environment, Nova Scotia Power, Public Works & Government Services Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Southwest Properties, Thinkwell Research, The Terry Fox Foundation, Trade Centre Limited, Transportation & Infrastructure Renewal and the Waterfront Development Corporation Ltd.

 

This year’s prizes were generously donated by: Fortis Properties, Mountain Equipment Co-op, Neptune Theatre, NSTransportation and Infrastructure Renewal, Remedy Facial Bar & Spa, WWF- Canada, Public Works & Government Services Canada and the Terry Fox Foundation.

 

Supporters of this year’s Clean Sweep event include: Enviro Waste, Tim Hortons, Clean Nova Scotia and Sicilian Pizza.
