The public hearing for the new Downtown plan begins today - Tuesday, May 5. If you wish to speak before HRM Council, you must sign up at City Hall, beginning at 5:30 pm. You, the individual citizen, have the right to tell the Mayor and Councillors that you want them to support a vibrant and prosperous Downtown. HRMbyDESIGN hopes to establish a clear and compelling vision for our city’s future through its urban design strategy that will establish guidelines for sustainable development. The plan includes, high-quality sustainable development and vibrant public spaces, incentives for good design and development and new design guidelines that will bring clarity and predictability to the development and review process. Councillor Dawn Sloane, DHBC and the Halifax Regional Municipality in association with Music Nova Scotia present Tunes at Noon, a summer concert series. Tunes at Noon is currently looking for Nova Scotian performers of all genres of music. The series will take place every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 12:00 noon in Grand Parade in Halifax, from mid-July to the end of August. Performances will be mainly acoustic in nature. Tunes at Noon will provide: PA + sound equipment; flat rate of $200 per act;
marketing and promotion; opportunity to perform a midday concert in historic Grand Parade. Please note that sound technicians will not be provided and it is the responsibility of the artists to provide their own mix. association with Music Nova Scotia, and with generous support from The Coast and C100.
On Wednesday, June 3, 2009, the DHBC will host the 15th annual Clean Sweep event. Clean Sweep is an opportunity for business members to get outside and contribute to a cleaner, more beautiful Downtown. DHBC is looking for businesses to get involved by submitting a maximum of two teams consisting of four to six people each by contacting Margaret MacDonald at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 423-2179. Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis by May 28. The Clean Sweep event coincides with National Environment Week (May 31 to June 6) and serves as the kick-off event for the Enviro Team, which consists of students hired by DHBC to maintain the cleanliness of Downtown. Registered teams will gather in Grand Parade and then disperse to clean their designated Downtown areas. After the clean-up, they will meet back in Grand Parade for lunch, awards and prize draws. Awards will be given out for team accomplishments including: most garbage collected, most enthusiastic/creative team and most unique garbage item. Prize donations for the event are welcome and appreciated.
