Majora Carter to Speak at the 11th Annual Carmichael Lecture
Eco-Entrepreneur Majora Carter will present her talk, “Home(town) Security,” at the 11th Annual Carmichael Lecture taking place on Thursday, March 8, at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, 1055 Marginal Road, 6:00-8:00 pm. The lecture is presented by Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC), in partnership with the Dalhousie University School of Planning’s conference, “SHIFT 2012.” The lecture is free and open to the public on a first-come, first served basis.
“Great cities need public engagement,” said Paul MacKinnon, Executive Director of DHBC. “This year’s Dalhousie University conference and Carmichael Lecture is about harnessing the great ideas that our citizens have, and moving them from grassroots to the upper echelons of decision-making. With the upcoming economic opportunities and challenges, HRM’s Regional Plan and civic election in the fall, it is more important than ever for Haligonians to get engaged.”
The future of green is local – and entrepreneurial. Eco-Entrepreneur Majora Carter will share stories about people addressing big problems with local solutions. Call it “hometown security.” While in town, Ms. Carter will tour the area and meet with key leaders to discuss how Halifax could become more engaged.

About “SHIFT 2012” Conference:
The 11th Annual Carmichael Lecture will open the Dalhousie University’s School of Planning’s 2012 conference, “SHIFT 2012,” taking place March 8-10. The annual, student-run conference brings together a diverse group of planning and design practitioners, academics, students, and the community to examine and discuss exciting innovations in planning and design. SHIFT 2012 addresses a grassroots shift in the roles of planners, community members and community leaders. Their roles are being redefined in the face of increasing community-based collaboration, initiation, and experimentation, drastically altering the way we live, work, and view our surroundings.
