Programs & Initiatives
Downtown Halifax is the hub of the Halifax Regional Municipality. It is a clean, safe and beautiful part of the city. DHBC plays an active role in planning, advocating for, and undertaking maintenance and beautification efforts.
Enviro Team and Cooperative Maintenance Program
We are passionate about keeping our Downtown clean and beautiful. DHBC partners with the HRM on matters of maintenance and ornamentation of the Downtown core.
During the tourist season, May to October, the DHBC hires an Enviro team to maintain and enhance the Downtown area by removing graffiti, posters and paint public items such as garbage cans and lamp posts. The Enviro Team is composed of students, who also serve as a valuable resource for tourists and visitors looking for directions or recommendations.
Curbside Collection Service
The Curbside Collection Service program was the first completely user-pay service in North America and works as a cost-effective means for businesses to pay for the collection of only the solid waste they generate. This service is available to all businesses, institutions and apartment complexes (with more than six units) in the greater Halifax region. The program sells garbage, recyclable and organic tags and collection takes place once a week.
Banner Program
DHBC provides banner space to promote events and programs that take place in Downtown Halifax. The Atlantic Jazz Festival, World Hockey Championships, Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, Neptune Theatre, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Children's Wish Foundation, Tall Ships and Metro United Way have all used the banner program to raise awareness about their events and programs. The DHBC also maintains pole banners for the Downtown, and Barrington Street Historic District.

Poster Kiosks
We provide an alternative space for posters within the public realm. This initiative is operated in conjunction with HRM By-law Enforcement efforts to clean up poster clutter in the Downtown. The DHBC constructed four poster kiosks and 10 pole collars for community advertising and performs a bi-weekly maintenance to the kiosks.
Graffiti Removal
DHBC engages Atlantic Graffiti Busters to remove all graffiti on private commercial buildings within its boundaries on an ongoing basis. This is the sixth year of the program and it has had a profound effect on the perception of Downtown as a place that is safe and cares about its environment.
Seasonal Decorations and Signage
DHBC partners with HRM to provide hanging flower baskets on George Street and Barrington Street during the warmer months. HRM maintains the baskets to provide a uniform look with the other areas of the Capital District. During the holiday season, DHBC installs and maintains wreaths throughout the Downtown.
